Cowl/Scarf

Tools and Materials:

Crochet Hook: Boye 5mm.  Yarn: Caron Simply Soft, 6 oz, 315 yds, 1 skein.
 Tapestry needle with blunt end.

Note: 1 skein of  6 oz/315 yards of above yarn will approximately make a  9 inch wide by 51 1/2 inch long scarf.

Crochet Stitches Used: Chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), double crochet (dc), sc (single crochet).

Crochet Abbreviation and Terminology used:
* * Means to do or repeat the instructions between these two asterisks.
R = Row, ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sp = space, lp = loop, st = stitch
Ch1 or ch2 etc.... (verb).  It means to make one chain or make 2 chains.
Ch-1 or Ch-2 etc...(adjective).  It means that there is a one chain or there are two chains.
Example:  Ch-1 space means the space is created when making one chain.  Ch-3 space means the space is created when making 3 chains.  Sometimes loop or loops may be used instead of space, thus ch-1 loop or ch-2 loop.

The Pattern

Make foundation chain of  32 stitches for scarf or 42 stitches for cowl.

R1: Dc on 4th ch from hook. * Dc on next st(ch).*  Repeat * * until there are total of 30 dcs for scarf or 40 dcs for cowl. Turn.

Note: When making the last dc of the row, make the dc on the 2nd chain of the turning chain.

R2: Ch3. Dc on 5th ch from hook. * Dc on next st.* Repeat * * until there are total of 30 dcs for scarf or 40 dcs for cowl. Turn.

Note: Always check at the end of each row and make sure there are total of 30 dcs for scarf or 40 dcs for cowl, including the turning chains which is made at beginning of each row.

R3 to 5: Repeat R2.

R6 (Filet Lace):  Ch4.  Dc on 7th st from hook. *Ch1, skip 1 st, dc on next st* Repeat * * until there are 15 spaces for scarf or 20 spaces for cowl.  Turn.

R7:  Ch4, dc on next dc post. * Ch1, dc on next dc post.*  Repeat until there are 15 spaces for scarf or 20 spaces for cowl.  Turn.

R8: Ch3, * dc on next sp. Dc on next dc post.* Repeat until there are 30 dc posts for scarf or 40 dc posts for cowl.

Repeat R2 to R8 over and over again until desired length is met.  Note:   For the last 5 rows of the scarf repeat R2 five times then fasten off, leaving 10 to 12 inch yarn tail.

Finishing:  Thread the tail of the yarn onto a tapestry needle then weave in the yarn tail onto the base of the dc posts.  Make slip knots at intervals and hide it under dc stitches.  Make the last slip knot and weave yarn within 3 or 4 more stitches pull the yarn tight to hide the knot within the stitches then clip the yarn tail to 1/4 inch close to the slip knot.

The reason for creating the knot is that it prevents the yarn tail from unraveling and coming out of hiding during wear and laundering.

Happy Crocheting!

Comments

  1. Please note that the pattern had been recently updated. Foundation chain is 32 (42) instead of the original instruction which says 31 (41).
